Since everyone knows each other in this community and it's an island, kids tend to leave their bikes and other toys laying around. You will often see a kid riding a bike, stop, get off, dump it on the ground in the middle of the road and run away. Sometimes a few hours later you will see a parent drive by and pick up the bike in their truck. I'd like to think that this is because the kids don't mind sharing, but as a coworker pointed out to me, the bikes get stolen by other kids all the time. There is something to the fact that many of the youth do not value their possessions as they are under the impression that if they lose or break it...someone will just buy them a new one. Sadly, that is the truth, as people are not overly concerned about the value of silly things..like for example...the windows on the school or the baseball diamond which they have destroyed, tried to light on fire and splattered paint all over.
Not to get all political here, but it is Canadian tax dollars that pay for these repairs, for grants of money that are simply given away to kids if they attend school even once. I find it both sad and troubling to see how much tax is taken off my paycheque every week and literally placed into the hands of those who already have paying jobs, yet still collect social assistance and those who use it to buy drugs. That, however, is all content for another blog post.
I am nearing the end of my time here in Webequie and there are a great number of things that I have left out of the blog in the interest of respecting the community as well as keeping my job. There will soon come a blog post to trump all others. The Webequirk to end all Webequirks. I hope that it will give you a lot to think about. Stay tuned...
